In today’s digital age, where technology pervades every aspect of our lives, fostering genuine connections among team members has become increasingly challenging. The rise of smartphones and other devices has made it easy for individuals to retreat into their own digital worlds, hindering face-to-face interactions. However, as we’ve learned from the Team Cohesion module in the 3D Coaching certification course, authentic team cohesion thrives when individuals connect on a personal level. To achieve this, we must implement individual-relational strategies that facilitate meaningful connections among our players.
While a complete ban on technology may seem impractical in today’s world, implementing strategic restrictions can help create opportunities for team bonding. One effective strategy is to establish team rules that limit the use of electronic devices during specific times, such as team meals. Throughout history, shared meals have served as a cornerstone for building relationships, providing an ideal setting for teammates to connect on a deeper level. By prohibiting phones and other distractions during team meals, players are encouraged to engage in conversation and forge stronger bonds with one another.
Expanding this rule to include other strategic opportunities can further enhance individual-relational unity within the team. For instance, consider extending the restriction to the lunchroom or during bus rides to and from games. These moments present valuable opportunities for players to interact outside of formal training sessions or competitions. By encouraging face-to-face communication during these times, coaches can facilitate the development of authentic relationships among team members.
Implementing such a simple yet impactful rule can yield significant benefits for team cohesion. By prioritizing face-to-face interaction over digital distractions, players are more likely to develop meaningful connections with their teammates. These connections go beyond surface-level interactions, fostering a sense of camaraderie and mutual support within the team.
Moreover, by nurturing individual-relational unity, coaches lay the foundation for a cohesive and high-performing team. When players feel connected to their teammates on a personal level, they are more motivated to work together towards common goals. This sense of unity can translate into improved teamwork, communication, and overall performance on the field.
In essence, the key to fostering authentic team cohesion in the digital age lies in prioritizing human connection over technological distractions. While technology undoubtedly offers many benefits, it should not overshadow the importance of face-to-face interaction in building strong relationships within a team. By implementing individual-relational strategies, coaches can create environments where players feel valued, supported, and connected to one another. Ultimately, this approach not only strengthens team cohesion but also cultivates a positive and inclusive team culture that fosters success on and off the field.

What does it mean to ‘parent our phones’ in a sporting context? Putting them down for a nap or giving them a day off so we can have rest and be present, seems key to forming and sustaining deep relationships. As Coaches, our athletes will also become how we are/who we role-model and how we make them feel. How does our phone use impact these areas too? A good read. Thank you
