Most Valuable Teammate

What we want, we recognize. What we recognize, we reward. What we reward, gets repeated.

What are you intentionally doing to build your sport culture? Team Cohesion is something we all know makes a performative difference. It also makes for a better experience for everyone.

One way to simplify building team cohesion, focus on the individual. There is one award on a team that should be more important than anything else. It’s also an award that has no athletic ability component. That recognition would be, the Most Valuable Teammate – the MVT.

See below how one coach used this strategy to create better team culture, and how to apply the strategy beyond the competition.

That coach did a great job of using competition to give the athletes the opportunity to be a great teammate, then immediately rewarded the behavior. Check out the following video on how to go well beyond the playing field to help each of your athletes use their platform.

Encourage individuals earning the MVT to list that award on their resume. Businesses are looking to build strong teams. The MVT shows you already understand that and have been recognized for it. As an employer looking at your resume, being first team all-conference, all-area, all-state, tells them you were good at something. Being recognized as the MVT, tells them something about who you are.
